The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showed an 11th consecutive month of growth as the industry gradually overcomes the pandemic-induced supply chain shortages that constrained production for much of the previous two years.

Growth in the month was driven predominantly by large fleet registrations, up 37.9 per cent to 92,699, reflecting the normalisation of supply. Private demand grew more modestly, up 14.8 per cent to 79,798.

Police have launched a campaign to tackle modern slavery in the construction industry

On Monday, West Mercia began the two-week ‘intensification period’ that sees police and partners take a stand against modern-day slavery in the industry.

The operation, dubbed ‘Operation Aidant’ is coordinated by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and runs nationally every year, focusing on vulnerability, exploitation and modern slavery.

The police activity seeks to enhance and develop knowledge of labour exploitation within the construction industry and highlight the signs of modern slavery that people may encounter in their everyday lives and encourage people to report it.

In Shropshire, there are currently over 1,330 homes that have stood empty for more than six months.

Shropshire Council has said these homes and other empty buildings represent a significant wasted resource, both to their owners and to those in housing need across the county and has said the problem of vacant properties can “blight local communities”.

While it has the resources to force the sale of empty homes, the authority is urging owners to contact them.
